What is powder coating and what are its benefits?

Powder coating is one of the most common and popular types of paint application process in the auto industry. It is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to a wide range of materials. Think of it as free-flowing powder sprayed on to a surface to give it a clean and polished look!

The process of powder coating

To help you understand what goes into the powder coating process we have outlined the steps for you below.

Cleaning

The surface of the intended part must be prepared properly. The part will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil or grease on the surface, then rinsed. The part is then etched which helps to remove any surface oxides and provides more surface area for the powder to stick to. After a second rinse, the part is dipped in a chemical solution to neutralize the surface then demineralized to remove any chemical salts on the surface.

Application

Powder coating relies on an electric charge to ensure the powder sticks to a surface. A specially designed spray gun ionizes the powder as it is applied which allows it to naturally stick to the nearest surface. The thickness of the application depends on whether the coating is external or internal and the type of environment the product will be put in.

Curing

After the coating, they bake at around 400 fahrenheit for 10 minutes. During the curing process, the powder melts and flows together to form long chemical chains which gives the coating its rigidity and durability. Powder coating finishes will not melt again once cured allowing the product to be used in a range of environments without a cause for concern.
